Working to ensure a modern framework for mining in the West.
Last week, in a landmark announcement, President Obama ordered a 20-year ban on all new mining claims on more than one million acres of national forest and other public land surrounding Grand Canyon National Park.
The moratorium comes after a significant rise in mining claims on land bordering the park. In 2007 alone, when the price of uranium hit a 40-year high, 2,900 mining claims were staked, jeopardizing not only the park but also the region’s watershed and a multi-million dollar tourism industry.
This victory could not have happened without the hundreds of thousands of messages that you and other Americans sent calling on the administration to protect the Grand Canyon.
Please take a moment and thank the Obama administration for conserving this American treasure. And ask the President to protect other national parks and special places by working with Congress to reform the 1872 mining law.
