Rachel Hopkins, who joined the Pew Environment Group in April 2008, manages the Marine Finfish Aquaculture Standards Project, which advances the development of rigorous, performance-based standards for marine fish farming. The project collaborates with researchers at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, on the Global Aquaculture Performance Index (GAPI), a cutting-edge approach to assessing and comparing the environmental performance of marine aquaculture across species, countries and various standards and certifications.

Before coming to Pew, Hopkins was a consultant for the National Environmental Trust (NET). She conducted research on the environmental and social impacts of salmon farming globally and assisted NET in advocating for stronger standards for the issue. Previously, Hopkins was a program associate with the Seafood Choices Alliance, a program of SeaWeb, which helps seafood professionals develop a more environmentally sound industry. While at the alliance, she organized the annual Seafood Summit, which gathered conservation groups, industry representatives and food service professionals engaged in developing a global market for sustainable seafood.

Hopkins holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Mary Washington and a master’s degree in environmental and natural resource economics from the University of Rhode Island.
